Acknowledgments
This book has been years in the making. Now is the time for me to celebrate its maiden voyage by acknowledging the many who helped build it and allow it to set sail.
First, I want to thank my daughter, Clemeen Connolly, a natural-born artist and studied animator. Her youthful joy has been an inspiration to me. Her vibrant spirit helped make this book come alive. Her vivid imagination added so much. I know that this is an important milestone that she will remember as she continues to grow both creatively and professionally.
I cannot forget to mention Charu Kumarhia, a practicing journalist who takes her profession seriously. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Charu, for running my idea on prime time news. Without your persistence in pitching my idea to your bosses, the public would not have begun to become aware of how a National Health Lottery could begin to change so many lives. Your engaging story had people stopping me on the street and wanting to know more. You provided that first key and opened an important door. Your profession is a glorious one. You are one of the important gatekeepers and key holders of knowledge that helps to define how America moves ahead in the future. I know you will continue to add your voice to those many others whom on a daily basis keep the precious right of free speech alive and well in this great country.
And there is Byron Belzak. He is a man with extraordinary writing skills. He took the time to work with me every inch of the way. Early on he saw that my idea had the makings of a book. He embraced my vision and added to it by clarifying what I was trying to communicate. I see Byron as my tailor. He took my ideas, many of which he scratched down on various scraps of paper, then cleaned them up – augmented with countless hours of interviews with me and fact-checking – and sewed them all together. As with any professional tailor, he made me and my ideas look great.
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my many friends, clients and relatives, who shall remain nameless, but not forgotten. I thank them all for taking valuable time from their busy days to listen to my ideas and helped me formulate the finer points.
Furthermore, there are two people whom I never met, yet unknowingly helped make this book come together. So I want to thank the little old lady who jammed on her brakes unexpectedly on a busy Asheville, North Carolina, highway and created the situation for another woman to run into the back of my writer's automobile. Without that incident occurring, Byron would have never come to my shop to have his vehicle repaired. When he came back to pick up his good-as-new vehicle, we spontaneously spent three hours talking about a myriad of subjects, ranging from automobiles to children to America’s future. Without that car crash (call it an act of God), we would not have gotten together six months later to write this book. So to you, dear ladies, whoever you are and wherever you are, God bless you!
Finally – and most of all – I thank my wonderful wife, a nurse by profession and a caretaker by nature. Without her patience and ability to listen to what I had to say and take it in, this book would have never taken place. It was her persistence that gave me the strength to write this book. It is her ongoing, unconditional love that makes me want to write more. Thank you, Donna Connolly, for the pen and paper, and for locking me in my writing room when I faltered!
